Hi Daniel,
I've done some fairly advanced things with it for the System Administrators Guild of Ireland (at http://lists.sysadmin.ie), arguably the most interesting being the automated maintenance of a members list against a MySQL database. New users add themselves to Drupal and use a PayPal module to join (on an annual basis) the 'members' role. There is an SQL statement joining the user and role tables and based on this, within an hour they start receiving mail from the members list.
Furthermore, I maintain fields for alternate (eg work, private, etc.) email addresses which are added to a closed list and if you are a member of that closed list you are allowed to post as well (that is, the acl for posting checks the list itself as well as the hidden/closed list)... that way members can seamlessly use their main email addresses for posting.
And a recent improvement was the use of confirmation emails containing md5 sums such that non-members, although they can subscribe manually, will have to do a challenge with each post. The challenge template reminds them that it is a paid member feature and that they should pay.
I maintain archives at http://groups.google.com/group/sysadmin-ie (the first posts to this are instructions on the new system) and I rather like having archives at Google as in addition to RSS etc. (and not having a potentially insecure web interface exposed) as even if my server goes away for whatever reason, I know that we will not lose the archives. Unfortunately there's no import feature at this time though,
Sam

Due to many benefits including searchable archive, x509 capabilities, better
ACL, better interface etc i've been convince to trial sympa.
If you've got any experience setting it up, or have some ideas as to which
features to enable feel free to email the list.
As you may have guessed, this list is going to be used for a trial so you can
all watch my trials and tribulations. Other email lists may follow later
depending on this trial.
Transition may begin in a few days after a bit of reading.
