Because we have to show the user the result of the SMTP dialogue with
his mailserver, so that he can see Greylisting or other error messages
that he has to fix on his own side.
As far as I know, most MTAs do not provide that feedback to the application.

I do not quite see, why a timeout above 60 seconds would be necessary
for SMTP. I couldn't find anything in the SMTP RFCs that says that such
timeouts should be necessary. If their mailserver is broken in a way
that it isn't able to respond within 60 seconds, they should fix or
replace the mailserver, I would say.
