I think a better way would be to request a delivery log from the MTA in
the SMTP session:

Something like this:

-> HELO mailserver
<- 200 HI!
-> DELIVER RECEIPT WITHIN SESSION
<- OK
-> MAIL FROM:
<support AT cacert.org>
<- OK
-> RCPT TO:
<pg AT futureware.at>
<- OK
-> DATA
-> ...
-> .
<- Sent.
(time passes...)
<- RECEIPT LOG:
<- 450 Greylisting active, please try again later
<- RECEIPT LOG DONE.
-> QUIT
<- Bye!

Best regards,
Philipp Gühring
